Peace Proms
From 3rd to 6th class, we had the exciting opportunity to go to the Peace Proms in UL Limerick. It was an unforgettable experience where we joined hundreds of other students to sing together as part of the Peace Proms choir. We spent weeks beforehand learning the songs and practicing in school, which made the performance even more special. On the day of the concert, the atmosphere was electric, with a full orchestra accompanying us and a large audience watching. Everyone felt proud and happy to be part of such a big event, and it created great memories that we will always remember.
We had a wonderful time celebrating Book Week in our school. As part of the One Book, One Community initiative, the whole school read and enjoyed the book Milo Imagines the World by Matt de la Peña. It was fantastic to know that everyone across the school was sharing the same story and discussing Milo’s imaginative journey together.
Throughout the week, pupils took part in a variety of fun reading challenges. From reading under a table to reading by flashlight, the children showed great enthusiasm and creativity while celebrating their love of books. Well done to everyone who took part!
We also celebrated World Book Day and the infants certainly did not disappoint. The classrooms were full of wonderful costumes and we were surrounded by so many famous characters and literacy greats.
We are now all looking forward to welcoming the Book Fair to our school in mid-March, where pupils will have the chance to explore and discover even more exciting books.
"When you read books, you feel like you’re out there in the world, going on an adventure with the character." – Matt de la Peña
Well done to the Boys and Girls who participated in a 5-a-side FAI soccer tournament hosted by Kiltullagh Pioneers FC.

Engineers Week
Engineers Week: Building Our Own Electric Trains
During Engineers Week, the junior and senior Infants were inspired by the book Milo Imagines the World. Using Milo’s imagination as our starting point, we decided to design and build our very own electric trains.
After researching how trains work, we began creating our first prototype. A big thank you to the infants and Ms. Moroney who brought in lots of milk cartons, which we used to form the body of the trains. Anita helped design the train template and soon our unique creations began to take shape.
Using insulation board, straws and tinfoil, we built our railway tracks. We also explored how steel is made using coal, limestone and iron ore. One of the highlights of the project was collaborating with Ms. Moroney’s First and Second Class, who were busy building bridges. By joining forces and sharing ideas, we created an impressive transportation system.
To finish the week, all pupils from juniors to second presented our work to the Middle and Senior classes, explaining how we designed and built the trains and bridges, as well as the challenges we faced along the way. It was a wonderful example of creativity, teamwork and problem-solving in action.
"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." – Helen Keller
5th and 6th class worked very productively this week to design a flood barrier using recycled materials. They tested their designs and evaluated how effective they were, discussing what worked well and what improvements could be made.
Our Gardening Begins
"Nothing is so beautiful as Spring –
When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush" Gerard Manley Hopkins
5th and 6th class made a start today on weeding the beds in the school garden in preparation for the sowing season. Despite the rain, they worked enthusiastically! Next the class together with the other classes will begin planting seeds in the classroom, later moving the young plants to our newly purchased greenhouse to nurture and watch them flourish. Watch this space to watch our wonderful green fingers develop and grow!

Once ready, everyone added their favourite toppings from home. Simply delicious!
Over the past five weeks in January and February, our Junior and Senior Infants worked incredibly hard during our Literacy Lift-Off programme. We are so proud of the enthusiasm, focus and progress they showed each day.
Throughout Literacy Lift-Off, the children rotated through four different stations. They enjoyed reading new and exciting books, taking part in engaging phonics instruction, practising their Dolch words and participating in fun writing and word games. Each station helped to build their confidence and strengthen their reading and writing skills in an enjoyable way.
As Dr. Seuss famously said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
Let’s keep up the fantastic reading at home and at school — well done everyone!

Science Week
To celebrate Science Week, our junior and senior Infants took part in a wonderful series of enjoyable and hands-on experiments.
We began with a rainbow bridge investigation, using paper towels to connect containers of coloured water. The children were amazed as they watched the colours travel across the bridges and mix to form a beautiful rainbow.
Next, with the help of some of our senior students, the children carried out an exciting reaction experiment using bread soda and vinegar. They learned that when these two materials are combined, they create a gas called carbon dioxide. Even more exciting was discovering that this gas can be trapped inside balloons! Of course, everyone wore their protective goggles—just in case!
We finished the week with an integrated STEM challenge: Could the infants build a house for the Three Little Pigs that Ms. Lalor couldn’t blow down? With a hairdryer acting as the Big Bad Wolf, the children worked together to design and test their structures. There was lots of teamwork, problem-solving, laughter, and cheering.
The infants learned so many new things, collaborated wonderfully, and—best of all—had an absolute blast during Science Week!

We had a very exciting visit from an archaeologist today! She told us all about how people lived in the past and showed us fascinating models of ancient settlements and dolmens. One of the most interesting parts was when she showed us how people used stones to grind flour from grains — it must have taken so much effort! It was an amazing experience that made history come alive for all of us.
