Hallowe'en 2025
Halloween in Junior and Senior Infants
Things got very spooky at Leitrim N.S on Thursday as the junior and senior infants dressed up in their amazing Halloween costumes! A big highlight of the day was a surprise visit to our classroom from a group of sharks! Thankfully, they didn’t stay too long before swimming off to explore other waters.
We even had time to visit the staffroom, where we made some delicious Halloween treats — yummy Rice Krispie buns!
A Frightfully Fun Halloween in 3rd and 4th Class!
What a frightfully fun day we had on Thursday in 3rd and 4th class!! Everyone pulled out all the stops with their amazing costumes. The classroom was filled with laughter, music, and just the right touch of spooky magic!

Ukulele lessons
There’s a real buzz in 3rd and 4th Class lately — ukulele lessons with Niall have begun! The children are strumming, singing, and smiling their way through each session. Everyone’s getting the hang of new chords and rhythms, and their current favourite song is “Dead Skunk” by Loudon Wainwright III. It’s safe to say we’ve got a few budding rock stars in the making!
1st and 2nd Class have been learning all about the famous Irish explorer Tom Crean and his incredible adventures in the Antarctic. Inspired by his story, the children explored what life might have been like in such icy conditions. As young engineers, they set out to design and build huts that could withstand the strong Antarctic gales. Their teamwork, and problem-solving skills shone through, just like true explorers!
3rd & 4th Class Visit to Portumna Castle
Last week, the children in 3rd and 4th Class enjoyed an exciting and educational trip to Portumna Castle.
The guided tour was packed with fascinating stories about the castle’s rich history, including the heartwarming tale of Fury the dog. We explored the various rooms of the castle and finished with an informative movie about its history.
After the tour, we had our lunch in the beautiful Kitchen Gardens, followed by a nature walk through the grounds where we discovered the Willow Maze and admired the fabulous pumpkins. The day continued with an adventurous orienteering session in Portumna Forest Park, where the children used maps to navigate their way through the woods — a definite highlight!
To top off a perfect day, we enjoyed a well-earned ice cream from our local shop, Skelly’s. Back at school, the children showcased what they learned by creating and presenting research projects about Portumna Castle. Well done to all on a fantastic day of learning and exploration!
We’ve had a wonderful start to the school year, filled with learning, play and fun! The children have been busy exploring through play, creating colourful art projects and enjoying our new ukulele lessons. We've also loved getting active with hurling sessions and learning new skills outdoors.
One of the highlights was going on a Mini Beast Hunt where we discovered all sorts of tiny creatures in nature. It’s been an exciting and busy eight weeks and we’re looking forward to more adventures ahead!
Junior and Senior Infants had a fantastic time celebrating Maths Week! We explored patterns through art and play and had lots of hands-on fun creating 3D shapes. Midweek, we joined First and Second Class for a special outdoor "Where’s Wally?" Maths Trail — a great chance to use our maths eyes out in the fresh air!
We wrapped up the week with puzzles and games on Friday afternoon, using our problem-solving skills while having plenty of fun. Maths really is everywhere — and we loved every minute of discovering it!

As part of Maths Week, Junior and Senior Infants, 1st and 2nd Class took part in a fun-filled Maths Trail inspired by ‘Where’s Wally?’. Over the past few weeks, 1st and 2nd Class have been busy learning lots of new PE games and developing their teamwork and movement skills. This week, the children were especially excited to learn how to play Dodgeball! There was plenty of energy, laughter, and great sportsmanship as everyone joined in the fun.
5th and 6th class left bright and early last week to embark on a historical trip to Dublin. There, they visited Glasnevin Cemetery, The GPO, The Garden of Remembrance and Kilmainham Gaol. It was an action pacted day and enjoyed by all. The class even made time for a rendition of Grace in the chapel in Kilmainham Gaol.
Excitement abounded today as the seating for our Outdoor Classroom was delivered. We're looking forward to enjoying many hours of learning in the open air, surrounded by the beauty of our landscape.
Ukulele lessons began today and the enthusiasm from all classes was clear from the start. Both 5th and 6th showed great focus and energy as they strummed to the tune of The Green and Red of Mayo!!!It was impressive how they grasped the basics so quickly. We look forward to the coming weeks to see how their skills develop and perhaps we might even try a fusion of ukuleles with our traditional instruments.
1st and 2nd Class have been learning all about the moon and the famous astronaut Chris Hadfield. As part of their Art lessons, the children designed and made their very own rockets! There was great excitement as they created colourful, imaginative designs and proudly launched their finished rockets. It was a wonderful way to combine art, science, and creativity!
Digging Into Science!
Our 3rd and 4th Class scientists have been busy with some real hands-on learning in the garden. They dug, observed, and compared soil from different areas, uncovering what’s really going on beneath our feet. It turns out all that digging paid off — we now know exactly what kind of plants will thrive when planting time comes around in spring!
September 2025
Welcome Back to all!!!!!
Our 3rd and 4th Class gardeners were full of smiles this week as they visited their sunflower plants — grown from seed back in spring! Some are now even taller than the children themselves.
After admiring their sunflowers, the children explored our school garden, collecting flowers, leaves, and stems. They pressed these into clay and added colourful ribbons to create beautiful ornaments — little pieces of nature turned into art!
Well done to all the children who took part in the Mini 7s competitions over the last week. Everyone played with incredible skill, talent, and team spirit. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm and determination on the field. The girls and boys represented the school brilliantly and should all be very proud of themselves!
