Mission Statement

Leitrim National School is a co-educational, Catholic, Primary school which strives to provide a well ordered, caring, happy and secure atmosphere where the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural needs of the pupils are identified and addressed. We encourage the children in our care to develop their talents to their full potential to grow into confident, caring members of the community.

First Holy Communion

2021

Huge congratulations to our 3rd class who made their First Confession last Tuesday! Such a memorable evening. We are very excited to be celebrating their First Holy Communion tomorrow, Saturday, September 25th. The children have been rehearsaing their lines and hymns and are very much looking forward to the ceremony. Maith sibh a pháistí - táimid an-bhródúil asaibh!

Bumper Crop!

Táimid ag obair go crua sa ghairdín!!! We are working hard in the garden! A bumper crop of spuds, pumpkins, peas and much more! Nature took over during the summer months and we were amazed at all the mini-beast life like caterpillars, ants, butterflies and bees who have made our school garden their home! Many thanks to our older pupils for helping with the weeding on our return.

FIS Entry

Congratulations to Leitrim NS 1st and 2nd class children who have submitted an entry to Fís Film Awards 2021 Competition. FÍS is a successful film project currently thriving in primary schools across Ireland. The initiative encourages children to explore the medium of film in the primary classroom developing essential skills in moving-image literacy, communication, teamwork, visual arts and even numeracy … oh yes, and it’s also lots of fun! 1st and 2nd class came up with 7 ideas, narrowing down to 'Schwolf of Horror'. The children created ideas on a story board before creating the videos. Well done to all the children on superb ideas and quality dramatic skills! More information: https://fisfilmproject.ie/

Zumba's Back!

We are delighted to welcome Zumba Dance instructor Laura from Dance it Out Ireland to Leitrim NS. The skies were blue, and we all enjoyed the stress buster. All classes stepped it out, and the moves were flowing! We are delighted to have Laura's expertise every Tuesday for the next five weeks! Get practising those steps and moves!!! World Book Day 2021

On Thursday 4th March we celebrated World Book Day, children could dress up in their favourite book or film character

New School Garden!

We are thrilled to see the completion of our school garden, ready for our school re-opening March 1st 2021. Our school garden was funded by Derrybrien Windfarm Community Grants 2020. We would like to thank Derrybrien Windfarm for their support, without which our school projects could not go ahead. The funding provides a life-line for enhancing our school environs for the betterment of our school community. All design drawings were supplied by Mark and Kerrie of Gardiner & Foenander landscape architects while works completed by Rohan Landscaping. Many thanks to both for providing their services in the most challenging of times. To the left you will see the design, complete with five planters, pathways, provision of bare-root hedging and enhancing the safety of the area with fencing and gateways. We hope the pupils of Leitrim NS will have lots of happy memories and we can't wait to get planting for the spring!

Re-claiming the space

This area was a not accessible for our pupils until. Percolation system and shed were only accessed for maintenance purposes. The grass was strimmed and that was that. Fast forward to now! We have now re-claimed the area and plan on encourage biodiversity in the area with bee-bombs and bug hotels!

Green Fingers

There are five raised planters, and the pathways are easy to maintain and weed free. All beds have been covered in mulch for the time being. We would like to incorporate a sensory approach to our garden so that children of all needs can enjoy this beautiful space. The benches also provide opportunities for an outdoor classroom, something that has come to the fore with Covid-19.

Bird's Eye View

Transformation complete - or is it! The real transformation will be when all the space has been planted with care by our pupils. When they have put their own 'stamp' on it, and take ownership of their garden. We can't wait! Let the planting begin!

Planters to the Ready!

So, if there are any budding (excuse the pun) gardeners out there, who would like to support. We are looking for seeds, flowers, or perhaps you have a garden tool you would like to donate! Your support is greatly appreciated - careful now - we might get you to do some weeding post-covid!

Operation Transformation Jan 2021

We are delighted to complete two major works in Leitrim NS in January 2021. All classroom carpets were removed and a polyflor vinyl has been put down to aide our enhanced daily cleaning regime. This will be a more hygienic and easier to maintain surface for our staff and pupils. The second major work completed is our School Garden! :-) Details and photos to follow!

Cycle Right Programme - September 2019

In September the students from 5th and 6th class participated in a 4 week "Cycle Right" Training Course which was given by qualified trainers from the national register of Cycling Ireland. The course is promoted by Galway County Council in conjunction with its Road Safety Together Committee and includes practical work outdoors covering cycling skills, safe cycling techniques, road safety, helmet wearing and correct fit, proper clothing, bike maintenance, tuition on correct positioning on the road including entering and exiting junctions, straight line cycling, shoulder checking and signaling all of which will be invaluable to pupils in the future.

5th/6th School Tour 2019

5th and 6th class students had a smashing day yesterday on their school tour. The first part of the tour was spent in Shannon Adventure Centre, where students enjoyed kayaking, mudslide and pier jumping! Needless to say it was action packed, and full of fun. Next, students jumped on the bus for the journey to Lough Key Forest Park adventure centre, where they took part in the "Zipit" activities with 900 metres of zipline to choose from! Last stop was Supermacs, where students replenished their energy levels! Hats off to Ms Moroney for the organising of an action packed itinerary, and the students for exemplary behaviour, complimented on by all their instructors.

Sports Day 2019

Allez le bleus! Leitrim NS was a hive of activity yesterday with our annual school Sports Day! Sprints, Egg and Spoon, Sack Race, Wheelbarrow race and of course the Teacher Challenge were the order of the day. There was even a special delivery from Skelly's to keep cool in the summer sun! Many thanks to our senior pupils for organising all of the equipment and events, and all the children for competing fairly in all events. Blues pipped other teams to the post. More photos to follow!

Music Matters Youth Orchestra Visit

Leitrim NS welcomed the Loughrea Music Matters Youth Orchestra on May 20th, 2019 to perform a 45min recital for our whole school. a Medley of tunes were played including Let it Be. We hope this may inspire more of our pupils to pick up an instrument this year. We also saw some familiar faces among the musicians! Well done Roisin McLoughlin, Kayne Boyle, Lauren Boyle and the entire string orchestra.

Zumba Classes

Leitrim NS is enjoying a series of Zumba Dance classes facilitated by our amazing visiting dance teacher, Angela! We are really enjoying learning different moves and combinations to hip-hop and contemporary music. We will be awarded certificates during our final lesson.

Spikeball Nationals

In January of this year, our school entered into this year's Spike-ball Competition. The County Finals were in National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI) and we entered both three girls teams and one boys team. It was great fun and competitive. Our girls' teams were unlucky to miss out on succeeding to reach the National Finals. There were some well seasoned Spike Ball teams, particularly in the Girls' Competition. Our Boys' Team had a mighty match against St Brendan's team, and managed to get through to the National Finals in University of Limerick (UL). The National Finals in UL was a huge event with teams from every corner of Ireland. Our Boys' team reached a third place play-off to reach the tournament final, however, were narrowly beaten, much to their disappointment. A great day was had by both players and supporters alike. Thank you to Ms Moroney for all her coaching and preparation for this event.

Scholastic Book Fair

Every year, the Scholastic Book Fair comes to our school for one week. This year the book fair arrived on them March 11th. Each section is filled with exciting books for all ages. Parents are welcome to come in and browse for books to purchase. 50% of all income from the Scholastic Book Fair is returned to Leitrim NS to purchase books for each classroom. Class teachers purchase fiction books such as novels for senior classes and big books for infant classes.

Cake Sale Fundraiser

Were delighted with the initiative shown by our 5th and 6th class pupils in organising a Cake Sale this year. All monies raised were donated to the Galway Hospice. A presentation was made, along with a talk organised for 5th and 6th classes about the kind of work Galway Hospice carry out in Galway City and County. Maith sibh a phaisti!

Basketball & Volleyball Court

Secad Project 2018

SECAD Grant Projects

Every year, Leitrim NS applies to SECAD Grant Projects through the Derrybrien Windfarm, with proposals to complete 'school projects'. In 2016/17 our project entailed three components. Firstly, the construction of a steel shed to house newly acquired PE Equipment. Secondly, the painting of our rear year with playground murals and the lining of a basketball & volleyball hardcourt. We are delighted with the results. We have new options for PE lessons as well as a great space for our morning play before school! Thirdly, we applied for a debrillator for school and community use. It is housed in a special unit that keeps the unit cool in hot temperatures, and warm in cold temperatures! In 2017/18 our project was focused on mural painting for our school underpass. Anita Boyle has been commissioned to complete murals two of which are now fully complete and add much colour and vibrancy! Our 2018/19 is currently being evaluated so watch this space!!!
