Mission Statement

Leitrim National School is a co-educational, Catholic, Primary school which strives to provide a well ordered, caring, happy and secure atmosphere where the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural needs of the pupils are identified and addressed. We encourage the children in our care to develop their talents to their full potential to grow into confident, caring members of the community.

5th & 6th Class Project

5th and 6th class recently completed a house design project as part of STEM. They designed their project at school, created a blueprint and constructed the house at home.  When complete each student had to present their project taking into consideration insulation, heat and power source. The house constructed had the interior designed, with furniture and fittings,  they were absolutely amazing.. Dermot Brennan will have to look out for these guys in year to come!

Grandparents Day 2023

On Wednesday 25th January Leitrim N.S welcomed grandparents to our school for Grandparents Day as part of Catholic Schools Week 2023.  Mass was celebrated by Fr. Iomar Daniels and children took part in the liturgy and song.

Refreshments were served and the grandparents visited their grandchildren's classrooms and enjoyed looking at their art work. some even took part in some games!  It was lovely to celebrate this day once again!

Farewell Mr Duggan

On Dec 20th, we assembled as a school to wish Mr Duggan well as he moves to Galway Educate Together National School (Newcastle, Galway) in the New Year. Mr Duggan, who was principal in Leitrim NS for the past six years, received presentations and gifts from pupils, staff, parents' association and the board of management. We wish him well in his new endeavours and good health and happiness into the future. We will miss you Mr Duggan!

We wish you a Merry Christmas!

Christmas Plays

Dec 13th saw the return of live Christmas Play performances in Leitrim NS! We were delighted to host audiences during our two matinees (Ms Lalor's Junior-Senior Infants and Ms Moroney's Rang a 1-2) and two evening performances (Mr Duggan's 3rd-4th and Mr McHugh's 5th-6th). Our pupils were superb on stage! Credit to their teachers for preparing their classes so well and to all the pupils who rehearsed so diligently over the last several weeks. A very enjoyable day was had by all!

FIS Entry

Congratulations to Leitrim NS 1st and 2nd class children who have submitted an entry to Fís Film Awards 2021 Competition. FÍS is a successful film project currently thriving in primary schools across Ireland. The initiative encourages children to explore the medium of film in the primary classroom developing essential skills in moving-image literacy, communication, teamwork, visual arts and even numeracy … oh yes, and it’s also lots of fun! 1st and 2nd class came up with 7 ideas, narrowing down to 'Schwolf of Horror'. The children created ideas on a story board before creating the videos. Well done to all the children on superb ideas and quality dramatic skills! More information: https://fisfilmproject.ie/

5th/6th School Tour 2019

5th and 6th class students had a smashing day yesterday on their school tour. The first part of the tour was spent in Shannon Adventure Centre, where students enjoyed kayaking, mudslide and pier jumping! Needless to say it was action packed, and full of fun. Next, students jumped on the bus for the journey to Lough Key Forest Park adventure centre, where they took part in the "Zipit" activities with 900 metres of zipline to choose from! Last stop was Supermacs, where students replenished their energy levels! Hats off to Ms Moroney for the organising of an action packed itinerary, and the students for exemplary behaviour, complimented on by all their instructors.

Sports Day 2019

Allez le bleus! Leitrim NS was a hive of activity yesterday with our annual school Sports Day! Sprints, Egg and Spoon, Sack Race, Wheelbarrow race and of course the Teacher Challenge were the order of the day. There was even a special delivery from Skelly's to keep cool in the summer sun! Many thanks to our senior pupils for organising all of the equipment and events, and all the children for competing fairly in all events. Blues pipped other teams to the post. More photos to follow!

Music Matters Youth Orchestra Visit

Leitrim NS welcomed the Loughrea Music Matters Youth Orchestra on May 20th, 2019 to perform a 45min recital for our whole school.  a Medley of tunes were played including Let it Be. We hope this may inspire more of our pupils to pick up an instrument this year. We also saw some familiar faces among the musicians! Well done Roisin McLoughlin, Kayne Boyle, Lauren Boyle and the entire string orchestra.

Zumba Classes

Leitrim NS is enjoying a series of Zumba Dance classes facilitated by our amazing visiting dance teacher, Angela! We are really enjoying learning different moves and combinations to hip-hop and contemporary music. We will be awarded certificates during our final lesson.

Spikeball Nationals

In January of this year, our school entered into this year's Spike-ball Competition. The County Finals were in National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI) and we entered both three girls teams and one boys team. It was great fun and competitive. Our girls' teams were unlucky to miss out on succeeding to reach the National Finals. There were some well seasoned Spike Ball teams, particularly in the Girls' Competition. Our Boys' Team had a mighty match against St Brendan's team, and managed to get through to the National Finals in University of Limerick (UL). The National Finals in UL was a huge event with teams from every corner of Ireland. Our Boys' team reached a third place play-off to reach the tournament final, however, were narrowly beaten, much to their disappointment. A great day was had by both players and supporters alike. Thank you to Ms Moroney for all her coaching and preparation for this event.

Seachtain na Gaeilge

Bhí Céilí Mór againn sa chlós don Seachtain na Gaeilge. Ballaí Luimní a bhí á dhéanamh againn. Bhí an sult againn ag damhsa le chéile – ag dul isteach agus amach, as dul trasna is ag luascadh!

Scholastic Book Fair

Every year, the Scholastic Book Fair comes to our school for one week. This year the book  fair arrived on them March 11th. Each section is filled with exciting books for all ages. Parents are welcome to come in and browse for books to purchase. 50% of all income from the Scholastic Book Fair is returned to Leitrim NS to purchase books for each classroom. Class teachers purchase fiction books such as novels for senior classes and big books for infant classes.

Cake Sale Fundraiser

Were delighted with the initiative shown by our 5th and 6th class pupils in organising a Cake Sale this year. All monies raised were donated to the Galway Hospice. A presentation was made, along with a talk organised for 5th and 6th classes about the kind of work Galway Hospice carry out in Galway City and County. Maith sibh a phaisti!

Secad Project 2018

SECAD Grant Projects

Every year, Leitrim NS applies to SECAD Grant Projects through the Derrybrien Windfarm, with proposals to complete 'school projects'. In 2016/17 our project entailed three components. Firstly, the construction of a steel shed to house newly acquired PE Equipment. Secondly, the painting of our rear year with playground murals and the lining of a basketball & volleyball hardcourt. We are delighted with the results. We have new options for PE lessons as well as a great space for our morning play before school! Thirdly, we applied for a debrillator for school and community use. It is housed in a special unit that keeps the unit cool in hot temperatures, and warm in cold temperatures! In 2017/18 our project was focused on mural painting for our school underpass. Anita Boyle has been commissioned to complete murals two of which are now fully complete and add much colour and vibrancy! Our 2018/19 is currently being evaluated so watch this space!!!
